Canelo is a handsome 5.5 year old Chihuahua/Basenji mix who is looking for a loving forever home. He weighs about 12 pounds and is full grown. Canelo has quite the personality and will make a wonderful pup for the right family/person, but he will need a family that is the perfect fit! Prior to coming to us in June 2020, Canelo had sadly spent most of his life outside and if he was ever in trouble, he was punished by not receiving affection or attention. Since being with us, he has been spoiled, loved, and has spent some time in foster homes too! Canelo warms up to gentle affection from those he trusts, but is understandably timid and standoffish with new people at first. Canelo will need a patient and loving family of adults over 18 only. Canelo loves the attention of those he trusts and can be a lap guarder towards other dogs, so he would be happiest as the only pet. However, he does love to play with certain dogs and may do well with another dog that is playful and is not a big human cuddler (dog intro required). Canelo loves to play, especially with toys and would love an active home with plenty of toys! He is great on leash and would be a perfect running or hiking buddy. He is housebroken, and knows how to use the dog door too! He is a quiet boy, only alerting when someone is at the door.  Canelo was used to spending too much time outside, but is still used to having a yard to run in so he will need a home with a yard or a condo with a yard, no apartments please. Canelo can be a digger if left alone in the yard and bored, so he will need to be watched to make sure he doesn't do too much gardening. He is a sweet boy, whom with a bit of patience, will be an affectionate, snuggly, and loving boy to his person/people. He is neutered, up to date on vaccines, vet checked and microchipped. His adoption fee is $160 which includes a complimentary vet visit. To potentially adopt him, please bring everyone living in the home 2 legged and 4 to our shelter location at 1102 W Hatcher Rd in Phoenix 85021, open Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 6pm. --Covid update: To adhere to CDC guidelines, we are open for adoptions only at a max capacity of 15 people in the building at a time.
